A Harare female commercial sex worker who was part of a gang of armed robbers that pounced on a Malawian man and went on a shopping spree with his money has been sentenced to an effective 10 years in jail.

Regional Magistrate Themba Kuwanda had initially sentenced Gaillah Muroyi, 31, to 13 years but suspended three years on condition that she does not repeat the same offence.

Circumstances leading to her conviction are that Muroyi together with her other accomplices armed themselves with a pistol before two of them approached the Malawian man, who was parked at OK Fife Avenue.

They reportedly jumped into his car, blindfolded him and drove towards Selous and Seventh Street.

The court further heard that Banda was force-marched into a room where there were five other people, who forced him to strip and surrender his personal belongings before assaulting him.

It was proven that the gang committed first-degree assault, first-degree robbery and first-degree identity theft led by the convicted.
