‘Impact of Doctors’strike pathetic’ – Health Professions Authority

The Health Professions Authority last week went around Harare’s major public health institutions, to assess the impact of the ongoing doctors’ strike – and have described the situation as pathetic and requires urgent attention.

Last month, the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors’ Association gave Government a 21-day ultimatum to resolve Doctors’ concerns.

However, when the ultimatum lapsed with no action from government, doctors at government institutions embarked on a massive strike from the 1st of March to date.

A survey of Harare Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital by Capitalk FM News showed that patients were being turned away particularly those who required attention from specialized doctors.

In an interview with Capitalk FM News this morning, Health Professions Authority secretary general Mr Sheperd Humure expressed displeasure, after assessing the situation on the ground and spelt out the need for an urgent solution.

Meanwhile public health activist Mr Itayi Rusike also weighed in on the issue saying, this problem was always resurfacing every year and it disadvantaged helpless members of the public who would be seeking medical attention.

In response to the deplorable situation, Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa visited Parirenyatwa Hospital and pleaded with doctors to consider the plight of the ailing members of the public – before begging them to return to work.
